Markel Homes starts work on one of Longmont's biggest new projects

Boulder-based Markel Homes has begun infrastructure work on one of the largest new residential developments in west Longmont. West Grange is approved for a buildout of 599 new homes on 126 acres. West Grange will join with Longmont's plans for a 29-acre Dry Creek Community Park, which features ball fields, tennis and volleyball court and an 18-hole disc golf course.

Located on the corner of Nelson Road and 75th St., West Grange backs to hundreds of acres of open space, which offers homebuyers access to a myriad number of biking and hiking trails, along with conveniene to Boulder, Hygiene, Lyons and Boulder county destinations.Current plans call for a 50-50 mix of single family and multifamily homes. The first phase will build 90 single family and duplex homes on 28 acres.

Markel is partnering with Meritage Homes on the project. Initially, Meritage will build single family homes that are priced from $350,000 to $450,000 and duplexes will be priced from $350,000 to $400,000.

Michael Markel observed that the project has been in the works for several years. After purchasing the land last summer — which is one of Longmont's last big pieces of land for residential development — "we've been taking it through our own design and engineering reviews," he said. Markel has also been closely working with Meritage to launch the first phase. "We'd also like to work with some regional builders in the Denver/Boulder area," he said.

"If the market continues to show the health and strength we've experienced this year, we could expect build out in five to seven years," Markel added.
