Paralyzed School Principal Receives $30K in Home Improvements from Home Builders Foundation and Sheffield Homes.
Nearly two years ago, Ralph Moody Elementary School Principal Allyson Mallory was paralyzed at T12 from a freak snowboarding accident. As a popular elementary school teacher, Allyson’s community rallied around her, hosting fundraisers and cheering on her recovery. But one large obstacle remained: the ability to fully access her Englewood home, and continue to host family, friends and community members at her home with ease.
During her recovery, Allyson found out about the Home Builders Foundation (HBF), a metro-Denver based nonprofit that modifies homes to make them accessible so that individuals living with a disability can live safe, independent lives once again. After receiving Allyson’s request for assistance, the HBF visited Allyson’s home to assess the project and determine the scope of work. From there, HBF sourced a Project Captain to champion the project.
Sheffield Homes, a long-time supporter of the HBF, jumped at the opportunity to help Allyson. Jason Gordon and David Lewis with Sheffield Homes, oversaw the project, which included adding a second bathroom to Allyson’s main floor through a partial garage conversion, along with a ramp to enter and exit her home safely. “It was an honor to work alongside the HBF on the Mallory residence. On this particular project, it was rewarding to be a part of the process of giving back to someone who has given her all to our community.” – Jason Gordon & David Lewis, Sheffield Homes.
The HBF, Sheffield Homes and their trade partners will be gathering this Monday, December 10th to celebrate the completion of the project, valued at nearly $30,000. Thanks to this amazing collective of companies and individuals from the home building industry, Allyson received these modifications at no cost. With the modifications complete, Allyson will now be able to fully access her home, and confidently host visitors there as well.
“HBF and their volunteers have provided me with the freedom to engage others within my home. Having a bathroom that is free of signs of my physical disability reduces my anxiety when I open up my home to family and friends. Thank you for all that you’ve done to rebuild my independence.” – Allyson Mallory
