Home Builders Foundation of Metro Denver Provides Accessible Home Modifications For One Of Its Own

The Home Builders Foundation (HBF), with Project Captain TRI Pointe Homes, recently wrapped up a multi-part home modification from for Merlin Widick. Widick, who recently suffered a stroke has been living in his modified home since August.  He and his family recently hosted an open house at their home to thank everyone who helped modify his home and make it possible for him to return home safely and independently after the stroke.

The work needed for Widick to safely return home from rehab included: adding a ramp in the garage and the back yard, threshold ramps inside the home, remodeling the bathroom to be barrier-free and replacing carpet with hard flooring throughout. The retail value of this project is estimated at $20,000. Thanks to all involved, all work was done at no cost to Widick or the HBF.

Widick’s long career in the Denver area building industry has touched many. When his need for accessible home modifications became known, former colleagues and business acquaintances came to help. TRI Pointe Homes stepped up to lead the project coordinating all of the donated work and materials.  The TRI Pointe construction team in Terrain oversaw the completion of the work that was supported by Van Dyk Construction, Alpine Lumber, Saddleback Design, BMC, IRG, Home Builders Services, TRI Star Drywall, Thoutt & Sons, Columbine Plumbing, Ideal Electric, QED, Steele Bros, Vista Windows, Spec 7, McClure Concrete, Metco Landscaping, Louisville Glass, Delta Plumbing and Best Choice Janitorial. The entire project was completed in one month and at no cost to the Widick family or the HBF.

We’ve had a life changing event in our family with Merlin’s stroke. It has been a lot of pressure on us to change our house to accommodate him coming home. The Home Builders Foundation and TRI Pointe Homes have been so generous to offer to come and help make the accommodations for him. I cannot tell you how fortunate and blessed we feel and how truly thankful we are to all of you.” – Peter Widick, Merlin's wife

“Today Merlin watched TV in his recliner and was able to move independently in his wheel chair throughout his house and yard. He had his first shower in his new shower and was so impressed by how easy it was to use. We, as a family, have no words to explain how grateful we are for all of the work by the Home Builders Foundation and so many volunteers who have made this possible for him to be able to really live in his home!” – Jessica F., Merlin's daughter
