CAHB Appoints Ted Leighty as Next CEO

Incoming CAHB CEO, Ted Leighty

The Colorado Association of Homebuilders announced today that Ted Leighty will become the statewide association’s next CEO. Leighty, who is currently Vice President of Government Affairs for the Colorado Association of REALTORS (CAR), will start on November 1.

“The entire statewide homebuilding community is fortunate to have Ted as the association’s new CEO,” said Bruce Rau of Oakwood Homes, the current board chairman for the CAHB. “Over the past decade, Ted has established himself as a leading association executive, government relations and communications specialist, and spokesman for the housing industry. With Ted’s leadership, homebuilders across Colorado will have an experienced and respected voice to represent our members and their customers at the state level.”

Jeff Whiton, CEO of the HBA of Metro Denver commented that "Ted Leighty brings a wealth of political experience to the CAHB and should be a great asset to the Colorado Association of Home Builders.  He has worked closely with us on Construction Defect Reform efforts for the past four years."

Leighty replaces Scott Smith, who has led the association for the past three years and is returning to the private sector. Smith will continue to hold leadership roles in the CAHB on the Board of Directors and the Executive, Governmental Affairs and Political committees.

“I am excited for the opportunity to serve a great organization like CAHB, and I thank the Board of Directors, and specifically Chairman Rau, for their faith in my abilities to lead the association,” Leighty said. “My professional experience, and my passion, is protecting property rights and promoting the American Dream of home ownership. I look forward to working with our members, industry partners and policymakers to continue to advocate for these pillars of economic prosperity.”

Leighty has been with CAR since May 2008.  He directed the association’s public policy efforts and government affairs, as well as CAR’s Legislative Policy Committee and candidate endorsement process. Leighty has served as a congressional aide in the U.S. House of Representatives, specializing in business, housing, transportation and tax issues. He also has extensive experience with local governments, chambers of commerce and other business groups on economic development issues.

A native Coloradan born in Boulder, Leighty was raised in Minnesota and Oklahoma. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Colorado in Political Science and Public Administration. Leighty serves as a member of the Littleton Historical Preservation Board, and coaches youth softball and basketball. He resides with his family in Littleton.
