New Program from Colorado Home Building Academy

High School Students Committed to Construction Jobs Looking For Internship Opportunities
The Colorado Homebuilding Academy has successfully engaged six Denver Metro area high schools in our Youth Construction Workforce Development initiatives.   Some of our high school programs are tied to our "Building Pathways" exploratory education classes and others are a deeper dive into construction careers where students earn the opportunity to participate in our "Youth Construction Apprenticeship" program.

The Academy’s Youth Construction Apprenticeship program provides in-depth instruction with 250 training hours and 128 on-the-job training hours over two academic semesters (24 weeks).  There are two phases to our Youth Construction Apprenticeship program:
  • The Explore Phase:  takes place at the Academy Training Lab where the students get a chance to work with program instructors and participate in basic skills exercises with hand and power tools.
  • The Training Phase: enables students to participate in weekly construction training, working towards industry recognized HBI, ICC and OSHA-10 certifications.  The Training Phase has two components:
    • Hands-on Academy Construction Lab Training 3 days per week
    • On-The-Job Training as Youth Apprentices with Home Builder Trade Contractors on Builder Job Sites 1-2 days per week.
The Academy is currently seeking Employer Partners to facilitate the On-The-Job apprenticeship positions for 19 students (age 17 or 18 years) who have worked hard, and interviewed with industry professionals, to earn Apprentice construction positions.

The Employer Partners support the Academy’s apprentices by providing paid internships - $10-12/hour for the hours on the job.  The students would be available on your job site for:
  • One day per week for four weeks
  • Two days per week for six additional weeks
At the end of the Apprenticeship program, the Academy hopes that the employer partners will consider offering summer employment or full-time employment for graduating high school seniors.

Would your organization be willing to engage in our youth-in-construction initiative and consider a candidate for an apprentice position on your job site?   The Academy welcomes an opportunity to meet with you in person to discuss details and to have you come to the Academy during youth training hours to see their work and meet the candidates.
