The homebuilding industry has generated 274,000 jobs over the past 2.5 years, according to NAHB Economist Robert Dietz, who testified before the Senate Banking Committee's Subcommittee on Economic Policy in Washington during a hearing on job creation drivers last week.
"Housing provides the momentum behind an economic recovery, because homebuilding and associated businesses employ such a wide range of workers," Dietz said. NAHB reported that half of those new jobs — or about 137,000 — are in the construction industry itself, while the other half are spread out among other sectors of the economy, including manufcturing, retail, wholesale and business services.
