How did you get started in your career?

Having been raised in this company it’s hard to say when my career direction really got its start. Perhaps at sixteen, when I began working summers in the field. Or maybe at twenty when I took a full time position managing contractor crews and company employees.

Though learning the office and financial side of the business while pregnant with my first and subsequent children is undoubtedly what laid the groundwork for my successful transition to company owner.

Has there been someone along the way that you credit with helping you get to where you are? And why?

First and foremost, my father Marc Scarbeary. He taught me the importance of both having a flexible business plan, and treating people well. He was able to keep the business afloat while adjusting to two separate economic downturns. Even going so far as to relocate his business to California in the 1980’s. During all of this he stayed loyal to his employees, which engendered their loyalty to him and the company in return. In addition, Cheryl Schuette has been an inestimable help to me over the past year. By filling the role of mentor both in regards to everyday business matters, as well as by introducing me to the HBA and encouraging my participation in the PWB.

What do you love about the Home Building industry?

Aside from the rewarding feeling of being part of creating someone’s home, it’s simply what I know. Having grown up in and around the industry, there’s a comfortable sense of familiarity in the process for me.

Tell us 3 things about yourself that people don’t know.

1. My husband and I have three kids ranging in age from thirteen to two. When I took over the company he left his job to help me with the PR and HR aspects of the business, as well as shouldering the load of kids’ and household’s needs.

2. During the last economic downturn I worked as the House Manager and Personal Assistant for John and Paige Elway. This provided me with invaluable insight into the client side of various issues.

3. Despite being the public face of my company, I’m actually more of a shy and introverted person. The hardest part of my job is often the socializing aspect. (So please take that into account during any awkward moments at Quarterly Luncheons or at Cocktails and Connections!)

Anything else you would like to share.

My father started this company thirty eight years ago. During his decades running it he cultivated friendships and beneficial relationships along the way. Many of which have helped me tremendously during the sudden transition to owner of a thriving business. Since his passing early last year this has been the aspect I’ve realized is my greatest opportunity for growth. Joining the PWB has been instrumental in starting me down the road toward developing similar relationships for myself. I’m looking forward to the years to come with this excellent organization.
