How did you get started in your career?
I got my start in the security industry as my first job out of high school. Four of my friends and I packed our cars and moved to California to do door-to-door sales for a company as a summer job. While I performed well, I did not like the door-to-door approach or sales tactics that I learned while working for that company. The next summer, I switched to the installation side of the business where I saw a quick opportunity to management. I became an installation manager at the age of 20, a territory manager at 21, and a travelling trainer across the United States at 22.
While all of this experience was crucial to my future success, the door-to-door sales business way of doing business did not bring me satisfaction. I saw customers being mistreated, sales people more concerned with commissions than proper equipment coverage, and other things that turned me off to the industry. I left the company I was with, and helped a friend start and build a new company for the next 5 years, with three of those years spent here as I relocated to Colorado to launch the Denver operations for the company.
Has there been someone along the way that you credit with helping you get to where you are? And why?
In a round-about way I think I have to thank my Stepdad. When I was 14 years old, I took my stepdad’s 4-wheeler on a joyride without his permission. I crashed the 4 wheeler, which ended up rolling about 50 times till it made it to the bottom of the hill. My stepdad held me accountable for what I had done, and made me pay him back the deductible ($2000.00) cost of the insurance claim. At the age of 14, that’s a lot of money. I worked 3 jobs all summer long so I could pay him back. After that, I just fell in love with working and the ability to provide and take care of myself. That experience provided me with the hard work ethic and determination that drives me towards success.
What do you love about the Home Building industry?
The home building industry is new to me, but I find the development process fascinating and am currently enjoying learning new things about the industry every week.
